DEMING — Arroyo Vista Senior Living hosted a support group on “How To Talk To Your Loved One About Senior Living” on Tues., Apr. 19, 2011.

More and more people across the country face one of the most difficult conversations of their lives: the talk with an aging parent about elder care, assisted living, or a nursing home.

It is not always easy to address the need to make a move to a senior living community with a loved one, especially a parent. As hard as it may be to start a discussion about a move, it can reduce a lot of stress—and even prevent a serious emergency—in the long run.

Too many children put off having this talk with their parents until a crisis occurs. Unfortunately, too many people wait to start the discussion until they are forced to make a decision. Often it is some type of health scare or crisis that forces an immediate decision. Given that we cannot predict the future, now is the best time to start considering future options.

Senior living counselors were on hand to facilitate the support group discussions, and to answer any questions or concerns family members may have about the issue.

Attendees discovered triggers that warrant the need for assisted living as a guide in future planning, enlisting your senior as a team member, how to start the family meeting, how others in similar situations are feeling, and more.

For more information on how to speak to your loved one about senior living, please call Arroyo Vista Senior Living at 575-546-0546.

DEMING — Arroyo Vista Senior Living hosted a discussion on “Caring for the Caregiver” on Wed., Dec. 8, 2010 at 5:30 p.m.

In the United States, more than 65 million people, 29 percent of the population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during any given year, spending an average of 20 hours per week providing care for their loved one.

Caring for a loved one or friend is not easy, nor is it something most people are prepared to do. After learning the basics of caregiving, there are often still times when family or friends feel overwhelmed or unable to care for their loved one or friend’s needs.

Forty to 70 percent of family caregivers have clinically significant symptoms of depression with approximately one quarter to one half meeting the diagnostic criteria for major depression.

As a family caregiver, it is vitally important to take time to care for yourself as well as your family member.

Representatives from Ambercare Hospice, the Alzheimer’s Association, and Gila Regional Home Health were on hand to share good ways to go about doing just that.

Attendees also discovered how to prevent caregiver burnout, how to find a little time for one’s self, how others in similar situations are feeling and more.

As part of the mission to provide exceptional, loving and dignified care to seniors in the Deming community, Arroyo Vista Senior Living is proud to host an educational event to assist those in our community in doing the same.
